Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could indulge her passion of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great tool for political activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just an elementary school student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. As a result of her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotions networks like Urban Beauty Collective.
